As a monitoring and observability company, we have a lot of monitoring built into our systems, as well. We have the standard monitoring to make sure that systems are performing properly, data is flowing through our infrastructure, etc. At the same time, we have monitoring for any sudden changes to tests that our customers are running. On September 29, 2021, 19:21:40 UTC, we started to see a tsunami of alerts at Catchpoint.

We see an increase in the number of companies building internal platform engineering teams. With this increase, we have seen some successful and some not-so-successful approaches. The goal of this article is to go through some of the practices we see out there.

Productivity is defined by measuring the amount of output over a given time frame. However, this discounts the quality of output, which is crucial in moving toward a more complete definition of productivity. Relating to services, increases in productivity generally highlight the amount of feature releases over time. This leaves out the critical measurement of quality compared to quantity. This is where a Service Catalog can greatly enhance true productivity within an engineering organization.

“Experience is truth.” That was one of the slogans my colleagues and I came up with in our first meeting as the newly-formed Digital Employee Experience team at ABN AMRO, one of the largest banks of the Netherlands. The subtext being that Digital Employee Experience, had to be top of mind for every IT project, even if that meant some unconventional thinking. But we were ready for unconventional.

The Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem is expanding at a rapid rate, with the number of devices growing every year. The increase in physical hardware being manufactured multiplies the amount of software needed to perform various functions on new platforms. There are a range of IoT use cases, including voice-controlling the lights in your home, monitoring air pollution, or the parking feature of a self-driving car.

A network service is an application running at the network application layer and above that provides data storage, manipulation, presentation, or communication. It is often implemented using client-server or peer-to-peer architecture based on application-layer network protocols. Windows services are critical processes that support vital server functionality. Sometimes these services fail to start or they stop working.

A broad enthusiasm for AI is already evidenced by the technology’s adoption within many organizations in 2021. In a recent multinational survey conducted by IDG, we found that more than one-quarter (27%) of the survey respondents have fully deployed AI-enabled ITSM/ITOM solutions, and another 34% have made initial deployments in select use cases and departments. At the same time, another 32% are exploring AI-based solutions or gathering information about them.

In this highly dynamic environment, organizations are looking for ways to innovate and manage resources efficiently. In the first part of the two-part blog series, we saw how organizations handled incidents without an AIOps solution and how long it took to resolve that incident — a scenario representing different steps to resolve an incident. In the second part of the two-part blog series, we look at how organizations were able to handle incidents after deploying AIOps.
