So you’ve got an app ready for launch, and unlike in the past where you simply ran it on-premises, this time you want to try the cloud. You know AWS is the leading cloud platform, and decide to give it a go. The first thing you’ll bump into as you learn about AWS is the various options of cloud instances available with AWS EC2.
If you’ve deployed an application or service to the Amazon Web Service (AWS) cloud, you’ve probably made use of an EC2 instance. One of the decisions that you had to make before you could start a new instance, was which instance type to use. Choosing an EC2 instance type can be a complicated process. AWS organizes their instance types into instance families, and within an instance family, there are varying sizes from micro to 32xlarge.
They say that necessity is the mother of invention. I believe that the aphorism has a business corollary: Disruption is the mother of transformation. I’ve seen it prove out over and over again throughout my career. In fact, I’d even go one step further to say that lack of disruption can actually stand in the way of successful change—and I have the scars to prove it.
With nearly every organization moving at least some portion of their infrastructure into the cloud, the value is well understood—we’re not going to re-hash those umpteen benefits here. But when you migrate, you cede some control. That’s by design and it’s not inherently bad. It does, however, mean that you need to keep an eye on those deployments to make sure you’re getting the performance and benefits you expect. And you need to watch it over time as things evolve.

The cloud gets all the press today, and while organizations are moving more and more of their applications and associated infrastructure into the cloud, there is still a lot of “down below” on-premises. A recent cloud computing survey from IDG shows that a clear majority of companies plan to use cloud services for over half of their infrastructure and applications.
When looking at an EBS volume in CloudWisdom, you’ll notice that in addition to the metrics we collect from AWS, we also create a number of computed metrics, one of which is netuitive.aws.ebs.iopsutilization. Simply put, IOPS Utilization compares the current number of IOPS that the disk is performing against the total IOPS capacity, and expresses this as a percentage. Thus, if you are currently running 1050 IOPS against a volume whose capacity is 3000 IOPS, the IOPS Utilization would be 35%.
There are lots of excellent reasons to move applications into the public cloud. But those benefits cannot come at the expense (pun intended) of performance. Your SLAs, whether explicitly stated and written into contracts or implicitly promised through your commitment to quality, are part of your brand. Falling short is costly. Even if you don’t have to pay penalty fees, your reputation and customer loyalty can take a hit.
