Mattermost v6.2 is generally available today and includes the following new features (see changelog for more details).

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term that describes the increasingly sophisticated ecosystems of online, connected devices we share our world with. The slightly odd name refers to the fact that the first iteration of the internet was simply a network of connected computers. As the internet grew, phones, office equipment like printers and scanners, and industrial machinery were added to the internet.

In a recent blog post, I introduced the tech stack our Mattermost Technical Writing team uses every day to build, contribute to, improve, and maintain the Mattermost product documentation at docs.mattermost.com. Building on this knowledge, I’d like to share more about how we work as a writing team, the branching strategies we’ve learned to adopt, and the review workflows every documentation contribution goes through before being merged into the codebase.

On October 4, Facebook and its properties, Instagram and WhatsApp, were down for more than five hours due to configuration changes on routers in Facebook’s data centers. A five-hour outage is an eternity in our always-on digital economy, costing the company an estimated $65 million and 4.8% in stock valuation. The high-profile Facebook outage is emblematic of just how digitally intermediated our economy is becoming, and the incident renews C-level focus on preventing similar service failures.

How we communicate with each other has changed, thanks in large part to rapidly evolving technology. Every day, we spend time online and on our smartphones. We’re accustomed to rich messaging with family and friends using images, videos, and emojis to help make our point and highlight our meaning. We also communicate asynchronously, meaning when we have time and it’s convenient for us.
