The impact of ransomware attacks on healthcare is as alarming as it is under-addressed. These attacks on the United States healthcare system alone are causing an annual burden of nearly $21 billion, including well over $100 million in ransoms. While the financial costs help illustrate the scale of the problem, the true cost is the tragic reality of impacted patient care – including higher patient mortality rates.

Modern organisations have become reliant on their IT capabilities, and at the heart of that infrastructure is a growing need to store data. Be it transactional databases, file shares, or burgeoning data lakes for business analytics. Traditionally, storage needs have been catered to by big iron hardware vendors, but over the last decade, more and more organisations have turned to open-source solutions such as Ceph running on commodity hardware.

In just a decade, smartphones have become ubiquitous. They facilitate communication via texting and calling, provide entertainment, enable administration, and offer utilities for their users in the form of applications. Users access these mobile applications through their app store, whether it is Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store. Developers construct them with the smartphone’s operating system in mind. The two mainstream operating systems that are targeted are Android and iOS.

The first keynote speaker for GitKon 2022, a virtual tech conference for the global Git community, has been announced: Dries Buytaert, Co-founder/CTO of Acquia and founder of Drupal. In this issue of the Calico Community Spotlight series, I’ve asked Burak Tahtacioglu from ParkLab Technology to share his experience with Kubernetes and Calico Open Source. Let’s take a look at how Burak started his Kubernetes journey, and the insights he gained from Calico Open Source. Q: Please tell us a little bit about yourself, including where you currently work and what you do there. I am a Sr. Software Developer in our Developer Experience team.

I’m Donatien, co-founder of Blecon, where we provide device connectivity to the Internet using only Bluetooth. In my previous lives working in the IoT division at Arm and my previous start-up, our teams constantly wrestled with debugging firmware bugs on remote devices.

gRPC is an open-source Remote Procedure Call (RPC) framework developed by Google and released in 2016. Although gRPC is still relatively new, large organizations are adopting it in increasing numbers to build APIs that connect complex microservice meshes that use disparate languages and frameworks. gRPC-based APIs can perform requests up to seven times faster than REST APIs and enable customers to easily implement SSL authentication, load balancing, and tracing via plug-in libraries.

Today it’s not unusual to see organizations having implemented mocking in their daily workflow, as mock APIs allow developers to speed up their development and not rely on external services. For those reasons and others, many engineers are looking to learn more about the mocked APIs and how they can best be implemented into their organization.
