As part of our EUC Managed Support & Consultancy Services, we regularly test new Citrix releases and investigate changes that could impact the environments we support. While upgrading a Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops site to version 2603 in our lab, we noticed unexpected behavior in Citrix Director. After completing the upgrade, the Connections overview showed incomplete session information.

When Citrix introduced License Activation Service (LAS), customers transitioned from the traditional file-based licensing model to a new cloud-connected licensing architecture. For most administrators, the migration itself was straightforward. The biggest surprise came afterwards, when familiar licensing metrics such as licenses in use, licenses available, and peak license usage disappeared from the Citrix License Server. The answer is no.

With the transition from file-based licensing to the License Activation Service now complete, many Citrix administrators are spending more time in the Citrix Cloud licensing portal. As organizations continue to operate and troubleshoot LAS-based Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops environments, it becomes increasingly important to understand what the licensing dashboard is actually showing.

On May 12, 2026, Citrix officially announced Platform Flex, a new consumption-based model for the Citrix Platform. At first glance, it looks like yet another licensing change, something Citrix customers have become fairly used to over the years. But after digging through the documentation, Platform Flex appears to be more than just another packaging exercise. The real change is that Citrix is moving toward a credit-based desktop consumption model.

New Windows Server versions often introduce subtle behavioral changes that only surface when interacting with different endpoint types. In mixed environments where both Windows and Linux-based endpoints are used, these differences can become more apparent. The following case highlights an issue encountered when using IGEL Linux thin clients against Windows Server 2025 VDAs, where keyboard input behaved differently compared to Windows endpoints.

Citrix has been transitioning products toward License Access Service (LAS) as the modern licensing method. Unlike traditional file-based licensing, LAS introduces service-based communication between products and the Citrix License Server. As of 15 April 2026, LAS becomes the mandatory licensing method for supported products. Environments still relying on file-based licensing will need to transition before that date.

As part of our day-to-day consulting work at GripMatix, we spend a significant amount of time in various customer environments where we are designing, validating, and troubleshooting EUC platforms. This particular issue surfaced during work for one of our customers, where we were validating Ivanti Workspace Control (IWC) on a new Windows Server 2025 environment.

The customer was already using Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS) to deliver Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) machines. Rather than attempting to migrate existing VMware-based VDAs, which often introduces driver conflicts and legacy dependencies, we followed a proven best-practice approach. We provisioned new VDA machines directly on XenServer using the PVS Virtual Desktop Setup Wizard. This ensured clean builds, free from VMware-specific components, and fully optimized for the XenServer platform.

Citrix XenServer is increasingly becoming the strategic hypervisor of choice for organizations running Citrix VAD and DaaS workloads. With XenServer Premium Edition now included in Citrix subscriptions, it offers a more aligned, predictable, and cost-effective platform, without compromising on stability, performance, or capabilities. A critical part of enabling that transition is delivering the right level of monitoring and operational control.

With Citrix now officially supporting XenServer for non-Citrix workloads and Broadcom’s recent licensing changes, many organizations are reevaluating their virtualization strategy.
