OpenTelemetry Project Updates | Observability Day Europe

Catch up on the latest OpenTelemetry project updates from Observability Day Europe. This session covers recent stability milestones, new tooling, and what's in progress across the OTel ecosystem.

Highlights include:

・Weaver — Define, validate, and evolve your own telemetry conventions using schema files and policy rules, with live linting to catch violations early
・OTel Injector — Zero-code auto-instrumentation via LD_PRELOAD for Java, Node.js, .NET, and Python, no application changes required
・Go SDK performance — 4–30x metric performance improvements through improved locking on metric instruments
・Span Event API deprecation — Log-based events are now the preferred path; span events remain supported during the transition
・Profiling goes alpha — Available in OTLP v1.11; the eBPF instrumentation team is targeting a 1.0 release later this year
・Collector stability — Batching capabilities moved to the exporter level, ~50% reduction in allocations via pdata improvements, and a ~20% memory reduction in the Kubernetes Attributes Processor
・Kubernetes semantic conventions — Now at Release Candidate, with feature gate support in the Collector
・General Entities — A new model to address limitations of the flat resource attribute structure
・New community managers — Welcome Julia, Reese, and Adriana! The new additions to the OTel community management team

Kubernetes semconv and OTel Operator (OBI) are both heading to RC — an exciting milestone for the project.
