Canadian Pacific (CP) is a historic Canadian Class I railroad incorporated in 1881. It was CP that connected the country and became Canada’s first transcontinental railway. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, it owns approximately 13,000 miles of track across Canada and the United States. Canadian Pacific initially introduced Enterprise Alert in 2016 to increase speed and effectiveness of incident callouts to information workers, and staff in various departments.

Whether it be on the administrative side of the house or in a production environment, the digital world is not slowing down. In fact, it is increasing by the second. Data is collected from a thousand different sources and often stored in the same number of places. Automating the collection, analyzing and augmentation of this data can be quite a cumbersome task and very time-consuming. Not to mention the loss in revenue when this is not done.

Maintenance of machines is an incredibly important task. And it is important to fix a machine before it completely fails. In reactive maintenance scenarios, speed of response is key. Once an issue is detected is important to communicate as reliably and quickly as possible to the right engineer. Ideally, the machine is connected directly to team of mobile engineers in charge and can let them know what exactly happened and what needs to be fixed.

A new article in the September issue of LANLine (“Automation creates productivity”) summarizes typical challenges and problems in network monitoring very well and is really worth reading. I would like to briefly discuss some of the issues raised and how our product Enterprise Alert® was developed to solve them. Of course, it is important that especially critical alarms are processed promptly. Even small problems can quickly lead to major failures.
