Train Your Employees To Know The Signs
A lot of this is about empowering your employees to know when they are starting to burnout, so that they can take action before it becomes too much. That is harder than you might think, but as long as you are training them in knowing the signs, it’s going to help them a great deal. Burnout rarely hits all at once. Most likely, it will be preceded by declining desire for engagement and lower enthusiasm, as well as making more mistakes, and feeling tired. There might also be some cynicism in the team in general.
Don’t Glorify Busyness
It can often be the standard in companies to glorify being very busy, and in many respects this is the world we have inherited. But this is simply not helping people, and if you want to make sure that you are doing all you can to avoid overworking and burnout in your company, then you need to make sure you are rising above that and not glorifying busyness at all. Instead, focus on health and care and making it clear that you really do care about your people. That is what is likely to really matter.
Offer Counselling Services
If you want to really do your part in helping your employees along, you might also want to offer them some counselling services for when they are struggling. This can be extremely effective, and while counselling doesn’t help all of the people all of the time, it is something that can certainly make a difference. You might want to offer EAP counselling to anyone who feels that they might benefit - and you will probably notice a huge improvement to morale and productivity as a result of this kind of movement, so it’s definitely worth your while.
Clarify Boundaries
Very often, burnout happens because employees are not aware of where the boundaries are, and they feel they are expected to be always on. It’s therefore powerful if you can clarify the boundaries as well as possible, making it clear that you are going to really make a huge difference and that you are not expecting them to take their work home with them. It’s amazing what that simple thing can do, and it’s one of the main ways in which you can be a much more effective leader in your business too.
