How to maximize span ingestion while limiting writes per second to a Scylla backend with Jaeger tracing

Jaeger primarily supports two backends: Cassandra and Elasticsearch. Here at Grafana Labs we use Scylla, an open source Cassandra-compatible backend. In this post we’ll look at how we run Scylla at scale and share some techniques to reduce load while ingesting even more spans. We’ll also share some internal metrics about Jaeger load and Scylla backend performance. Special thanks to the Scylla team for spending some time with us to talk about performance and configuration!

Community Highlight: How InfluxDB Enables IoT Monitoring of Gas Station Tanks

I recently spoke with Alex Skrivseth, the Operations Manager at The Shed App, and discovered how he’s using InfluxDB to monitor the current levels of gas and diesel at various gas stations. Simply by extracting IoT sensor data, he has been able to provide valuable previously inaccessible data to fuel truck drivers.

Introducing the Datadog mobile app

When you’re on call and get paged at an inconvenient time, you need to be able to quickly determine the seriousness of the issue and act decisively to reduce system downtime. But pager notifications often don’t give you the information you need to investigate an issue from your mobile device, meaning that access to a laptop at all times is a must.

Why Netdata is free

When I first started the project that became the Netdata Agent, I was trying to solve a painful, real-world problem: IT infrastructure monitoring tools fell short when it came to providing complete, granular metrics in real time. Believe me, I had no shortage of tools to choose from, but each of them lacked something either in the ability to see every metric I needed, or see it at the frequency required.

The Mattermost codebase is preserved on ice for the next 1,000 years

A lot will happen over the next 1,000 years, and the codebase for the Mattermost open source project will be along for the entire ride. On July 8, GitHub successfully deposited 21 terabytes of open source repository data in the Arctic World Archive, a (very) long-term storage facility located on the Svalbard archipelago in Norway near the North Pole.

Extend Your Splunk App with Custom REST Endpoints

As you build more complicated Splunk apps, you might wonder, “What is the best way to make the features in my app more usable?” If you’re adding new SPL commands or creating ways to input new data sources, the answer is straightforward. But imagine you’re trying to address one of the following scenarios: For cases like these, consider extending the Splunk REST API with custom endpoints.

Graph Analytics Using Splunk and the Machine Learning Toolkit

Almost all data in Splunk can be turned into graphs, and that's possibly something you may not have considered before. In your network traffic data, a source IP connects to a destination IP with attributes like bytes in/out, packets, ports, and other properties. Users log into an interconnected stack of systems, services, devices and applications which are connected with each other. Transactions run from A to B to C and may describe a process that helps you analye user journeys and business processes in general.

Announcing HAProxy Data Plane API 2.1

Version 2.1 of the HAProxy Data Plane API expands support to all available request and response actions, adds Lua actions, and improves file handling. A year ago, we introduced version 1.0 of the HAProxy Data Plane API, enabling you to configure your HAProxy load balancers remotely through a modern RESTful HTTP API. That first version of the API focused on the essential behaviors for creating frontend proxies, backend server pools, ACLs and traffic switching rules.

The Words of the Birds - Leveraging AI to Detect Songbirds

When was the last time you had the chance to listen to some of the most beautiful concerts that nature can play for you? From simple chirps and tweets to complex bird songs composed into a sophisticated soundscape, you may wish you could decrypt and understand their daily conversation. “Hey, good morning, how are you today?”, you might hear in the early hours, sometimes so loudly that you are awakened from the chirping.
