And they give us mixed feelings—fear, anxiousness, direction, a sense of adventure. Most often, they represent a future state or location we are moving towards. For IT there is a new edge. The Edge of computing. The place where things and people are connecting with our networked digital world.

As the world moves towards the “new normal” on account of the pandemic, numerous adjustments and recalibrations have been made in all aspects of our lives, including the organizations we are part of. As businesses base their operations on a dispersed workforce beyond the corporate perimeter, IT teams have been the ones largely enabling this successful migration to home workspaces and further sustaining the remote network to foster productivity.

Class is almost in session, and this year will look very different than it did in years past. Depending on the state and district, school officials have decided to continue virtual learning or put safety plans in place for in-person learning. In any case, technology will be the backbone for successful learning in 2020. Schools’ IT departments will be integral in ensuring students and teachers have reliable devices and easy access to software applications to start and finish the year strong.

We hate waiting. In a world that somehow always seems to run short of time, nobody wants to wait. No queues. No delayed flights. We can’t even stand hold music anymore. (Hours of looped music to get my internet connection fixed? No thanks!)

In the life of a hardware asset, there is only one point when we know for sure we have what we purchased: When we first receive the asset. This hardware asset scenario reminds me being a little kid and playing catch with my neighbor. I would take a new baseball out of the package and throw it over the fence to him. He would catch it and then throw it back. Sometimes he would try to trick me and throw a different ball back over the fence: an old baseball, a softball, and one time a soccer ball.

Who doesn’t like a good ole’ game of “Guess how many M&Ms or marbles are in that jar”? Are you off by 20, 50, or by a couple hundred? Or maybe you’re fairly close estimating the number of spheres in a confined space. Now think about your IT assets in your organization. Are all of them accounted for? Where are they located? Take a guess. Guess again. A miss is as good as a mile.
