Here is an example of a typical day as an SRE from last Monday. After the handover in the morning with our team in Australia, developers started complaining about one of our test environments not working. We monitor our test and preview environments with Instana, so I jumped into the UI and checked all services using the application perspective view. Looking at the dashboard it was clear that something started breaking at around 9:30am.

From Instana’s inception we have believed that in order for our users to get the most out of an Application Performance Monitoring (APM) platform we needed to lower the barriers of entry and make it easy for users to quickly find the information that is important to them. Instana has developed many technologies, like Application Perspectives, to democratize the use of our platform, enabling individuals on Operations, Development, DevOps, and SRE teams to work autonomously.

Share: This is the third post in a series on the Life of an SRE at Instana. Check out the first post and second post. Our Instana SaaS platform is running approximately 4000 containers containing Java and NodeJS processes across multiple regions. We have a bi-weekly release process where new features are rolled out to all customers. On top of that we are deploying hotfixes several times a day. To keep up with the ever changing environments, we rely heavily on Instana’s auto-discovery mechanism.

Reliability, repeatability, and speed are the underlying principles that must be mastered to successfully achieve DevOps transformation. Agile development feeding a CI/CD pipeline is only the initial step. Without accurate monitoring providing stabilizing feedback, speed can quickly turn into chaos. The only way to keep monitoring in synchronization with rapid deployments is automation.
